The special Berlin–Marseille train leaves Anhalter Bahnhof

Relatives take leave of young emigrants about to board the special Berlin–Marseille train on the Anhalter Bahnhof train platform. In order to circumvent an imminent halt on immigration to Palestine planned by British Mandate authorities, the Jewish Agency in Germany and the Palestine & Orient-Lloyd travel bureau organized a special, extra train. This was achieved within a matter of days and on September 2, 1936 an extra train for the Berlin-Marseille route was scheduled. It brought 650 émigrés to the French steamship Patria, headed for Palestine, and was the largest transport of émigrés from Germany up until that point. Around half of the émigrés boarded the train at Anhalter Bahnhof, the rest boarded at other points in Germany.
