Rembrandt could pack dramatic biblical narratives into a very small format. In this etching, he depicted the martyrdom of St. Stephen outside the city of Jerusalem. Divine light, represented by slanting lines, falls on the saint’s head while the empty slipper makes the saint’s bare foot more visible and emphasizes the fragility of his life and the injustice of his murder.
