MOSQUES AND CHURCHES
Mosques and churches were popular places to visit. Judging by the following diary excerpt we can guess that the von Hallwyls visited the Sultan Hassan Mosque:
“21st of Nov. Visited two mosques and the library, the latter owns several copies of the Qur'an that are decorated most beautifully, gifts from various sultans from the 9th century to more contemporary times.
22nd of Nov. We visited some mosques and travelled through the bazaars. After breakfast we went to the citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, where in the south-east corner is the grave of Muhammad Ali, surrounded by beautiful lattice work. Travelled back over Place Sultan-Hassan and Muhammad Ali Street.”
