The Tenjin Festival was a major annual
event in Naniwa (now known as Osaka),
held in honour of the god of learning. A
portable shrine to the god was taken
through the streets and onto the river,
accompanied by hundreds of boats
carrying guests and drummers.
In this image, the riverbanks with their
buildings slant inwards towards a central
vanishing point, a technique adopted by the
artist from western landscape designs.
