The Triptych of St Hedwig

The Master of the Polyptych of the Annunciation (studio)1470–1480

Wrocław, Poland

The Gothic retabulum (‘cupboard’-type altar setting) was made for the Church of St Elizabeth in Wrocław. The figure of St Hedwig is accompanied by St Sebaldus and (probably) St Vincent. The side sections of the altar contain the portraits of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of Wrocław, and St George, the patron of knights. The three gilded open-work arches placed above the figures of the Saints, confirm the late Gothic provenience of this work.
