This piece belongs to his second era known as Abstraction and Informalism, understood to be from 1956–1963.
During this second era he appeared to continue to practice gestural abstractionism, but he still includes sands with their natural color and demonstrates his interest in the treatment of textures. The works from this period have a strong abstract character, with superimposed spots of color, different pictorial techniques, dripping with dark tones, and agglutinated sand grains with glue. The support canvas can still be seen in places which contrasts with the predominant sand texture in the piece.
