After having overcome numerous bureaucratic hurdles, the City Temple in Seitenstettengasse finally opened in 1826. Behind the five-story Classicist façade was not only a synagogue but also offices, a Jewish school, an old people’s home, and a ritual bath. It was designed by Joseph Kornhäusel, one of the most important representatives of Classicism in Austria.
