Spanish artist Pedro de Mena became very popular for his expressive sculptures, such as this wooden bust representing the Virgin of Sorrows. The sculptor combined several materials, such as gessoed fabric, glass eyes and ivory teeth, with detailed brushwork to create a more life-like figure. The Virgin's anguished facial expression was meant to provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer, inspiring remorse and prayer. This type of bust was often paired with Christ as the Man of Sorrows, both showing their suffering during the events leading up to the Crucifixion.
