Extract from the 'Baner ac Amserau Cymru', a weekly Welsh-language newspaper periodical launched by Thomas Gee. This particular print was for the 26th of October 1904. The newspaper started out as 'Baner Cymru', in 1857, before Gee amalgamated the periodical with the Liverpool-based 'Amserau' to produce the 'Baner ac Amserau Cymru', in 1859. The periodical was published between 1859 and 1971, succeeded by 'Y Faner', in 1972. The newspaper might be considered Liberal in learning and of largely non-conformist views, in-keeping with Gee's general attitudes.
The Library’s collection of newspapers covers editions published in Wales and the Marches after 1911. Holdings for newspapers published prior to 1911 tend to be less complete, and have been acquired through purchases and donations.
The Library has a particular mission to collect Welsh regional newspapers, British national and regional newspapers, newspapers from Scotland and Ireland and Welsh newspapers from other countries, for example the USA and Argentina. The collection also contains some major international titles on microfilm and CD Rom such as El Pais (Spain), Le Monde (France), New York Times (USA).
