Hayden worked as a laborer for many years before turning to painting full time. He lived and worked in New York in the 1920s, during the Harlem Renaissance, then moved to Paris. His subjects ranged from African American culture and folklore to Parisian café life and African exotica. This surrealistic scene shows two men watching a large wolf as it races around an industrial building.
