Farmington, United States

This passe-partout was taken near the west facade of Hill-Stead and features Theodate Pope Riddle with her recently adopted chow, Jim-Jam. In a letter to Theodate dated July 22, 1910, American novelist Henry James considered potential names for the new dog. “I hoped I might have found you today shortly after lunch in order to tell you how proud I am that you have been moved to see that sweet and solemn beast in the light of a possible ‘Jim!’” James wrote. “Or as a tribute to the creature’s sweetness, Jam! - or even Jim-Jam! I, in fact, think ‘Jim-Jam’ really fine - it grows on one.”
