An Arithmometer is a mechanical calculating machine invented by the Frenchman Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar (1785-1870). It was the world's first calculating machine to go into series production. As well as addition and subtraction, it could perform multiplication and division by means of repeated addition and subtraction. This luxury version of the calculating machine was a gift to the king of Portugal. Photo: Jan Braun, HNF
