Thread spool

Thread spool with black cotton thread. Thread spools were used in sewing but they were also used in schools as part of dressmaking. Future schoolmistresses had to know about dressmaking to teach the subject known as domestic chores. Girls learned to sew in preparation for becoming mothers and housewives. Boys and male students in teacher training colleges were excluded from this subject.
