The talented and multifaceted artist Guillermo Kuitca was the youngest member of an entire generation of Argentine artists that, after the end of the military dictatorship in 1983, discovered in painting fertile terrain to explore a newfound freedom. As interested in theater as he was in painting, Kuitca conceived performances and wrote stage adaptations until he began bringing his ideas about theater to bear on his painting. The references in his work are as multiple as they are refined: war, love, freedom, and death are some of the concepts embodied in his beds. The bed that appears in "Tres noches" recurs in much of his work from these years, as does the stage, represented as an unstable space in three different series of paintings. The poignant and wrenching atmosphere in this work is fruit of the dark palette and the deliberately imprecise brushstrokes used to depict the tiny characters. Over time, Kuitca’s art has become less expressionist and more conceptual. He is indisputably one of the most attractive and distinctive artists on the contemporary scene.
