The central nude is seen at a fairly early stage of the artist's creation and probably dates to sometime between 1515 and the early 1520s. The other related studies modify and firm up the pose with increased use of finer hatched pen-strokes until Bandinelli was able to use it in an adapted form for his successful sculpture of Orpheus commissioned by Pope Leo X and carved in about 1519.
