Large three-quarter grooved axe, manufactured from dusky blue green to greenish black diorite, with a very symmetrical blade. The pecked groove is shallow on the sides, deeper on one edge. The poll exhibits scratches and striations on all sides and in all directions. The bit has diagonal striations, especially apparent on one face. On the opposite side, the axe has distinct scratching or scoring, especially near the groove, oriented parallel to the blade. This axe was recovered from a habitation area of the Pueblo Grande site. Pueblo Grande was a large village located at the headgates of a major canal system. Occupied as early as AD 500, the site reached its greatest extent during the Classic Period. Museum Accession: 1996.17
