The Three Kings - Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar - were among the first to visit the newborn Christ, and are usually depicted as a trio. A star guided them to the babe in the manger, to whom they brought rich gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. From the 12th century on the Three Kings were interpreted as representing various stages of life, as well as the three continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa.
