Scenes and situations that could be identified as historical events do not form part of Marées’ mature out put. The configuration here of people in a time less landscape that relies for its structure on the trunks of trees, is expressing basic human situations: youth and man hood, activity and contemplation. In this work, the estrangement of humanity and nature seems to have been resolved. Each position and movement of the figures serves to integrate them into a rationally ordered composition of horizontals, verticals, and diagonals. Nevertheless the atmosphere is lyrical, conveyed by the evening twilight, in which the colors — layer upon layer, with the top most layer applied fluidly and freely, as in a sketch — glow with seemingly unfathomable depths.

The journey consolidated his style which was strongly influenced by Eugène Delacroix. After having served in the Franco-Prussian War he took up residence in Berlin and Dresden. The most important commission he received was to create frescoes for the Zoological Station in Naples. Most of his compositions depict country scenes, painted in a realistic style.
