Thuribles, or Incense Burners

One of two incense burners, or thuribles, which were found in a shrine outside Carrawburgh Roman Fort (add in a link to the site as it’s one of our free sites). These pieces are just two of many items from Coventina's Well, a votive offering to a mysterious goddess, unknown before this discovery. Unlike the altars which have been carved with great skill, these items appear to have been made by an amateur - the name of the goddess is spelt differently on each one! They represent a less expensive (than an altar) way of a devotee offering something to the goddess.
