Tie-dyeing of Bai People

Among all the dyeing and printing techniques of ethnic minority groups of Yunnan, tie-dyeing of the Bai and batik of the Miao people are the two that are well-known both home and abroad. Dyes used in these techniques are all from the nature, plants or minerals for instance, creating patterns of distinctive ethnic features. As indicated by the name, tie-dyeing meanings the crafter would first tie the fabric firm to prevent the penetration of dyes, resulting in various natural patterns, while in batik, patterns would be painted with liquid wax first on the fabric, which, after dyeing, would take on the look of white patterns on a blue foundation.
