Yadkin County NC was once the home to six factories that made thousands of baskets for tobacco farmers. The oak in this area was more pliable and worked better for this style which was created about 1880 to keep the tobacco cleaner when it arrived at the market. When the tobacco came to auction the bundles or “hands” would be stacked in a circular pattern on a basket and sorted by grade.
