The image of a togate man wearing a veil, symbol of the new Roman religion, represents the pater familias offering sacrifices to the gods before an altar. He is the absolute master and head of the household under Roman law, and as such he must uphold religious tradition. The figure is modelled after the image of the Emperor Augustus, head of state and Pontifex Maximus.
