Tokiwa Gozen nursing her youngest son, while his elder brother plays with a doll representing Benkei. The twelfth-century Tokiwa Gozen, daughter of Fujiwara no Korinichi, was the concubine of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. She bore him three sons, of whom the eldest two became priests. The youngest, Usiwaka, later became a famous warrior under the name Yoshitsune. One of his exploits was the defeat of the robber-pirest Benkei. Amusingly, Kunisada here anticipates this event, as the baby, Ushiwaka, tries to grasp his brother's Benkei doll.
