Flemish painter. Learned from his father Bartholomeus de Mompere I (1535–1595/97), in uence from Pieter Brueghel I (1526/30–1569). Worked in Antwerp (1581–1635). Visited Italy and Switzerland (?). One of the most in uential masters of the landscape of his time. Painted valleys, rocks, mountains, cities, also winter landscapes. For the sta age in his landscapes, collaborated also with Frans Francken II (1581– 1642), Peter Snayers (1592–1667) and Brueghel the Younger (1601–1678) etc. Teacher of Louis de Caullery (1579/1581–1621). Up to a point, this painting follows the rule of thirds principle of composition. The panoramic view of the river valley, realistically and precisely painted buildings and the human and animal figures show that the author as observed the surrounding with great care. The horizon has been drawn relatively high.
