The only surviving tower of the Upper Castle is named after Gediminas, the founder of Vilnius and the Grand Duke of Lithuania. After the Muscovite occupation in 1655–1661, the damaged castle was not rebuilt. During the occupation of the Russian Empire, the Castle Hill entered the territory of the Vilnius military fortress, and a wooden optical telegraph superstructure was built on the lost upper floors of the tower in 1837–1838. After the liquidation of the fortress, a cafe was established in the tower.
