Grete Waldau was one of the most awarded painters of her time. She was born in Wrocław and began her artistic studies in this city. Later she was educated in Nuremberg and Berlin. In addition, she studied architecture, perspective and mathematics. She received prestigious awards at international art exhibitions and state decorations. She mainly painted architectural views. She created both easel and wall paintings. The presented painting shows the Wrocław town hall, probably painted for the artist's private use. The painting is strikingly detailed in the rendering of details and the ability to build chiaroscuro.
