Betula medwediewii is as rare as the plains zebra. Once widespread across the Northern Hemisphere, it is now confined to the Caucasus Mountains, where it was protected from the ice ages. This ancient species grows very slowly and has limited seed dispersal. It is threatened by forestry, agricultural practices and over-grazing from wild and domestic animals such as goats and cows.
