“Listening to the Rift Valley” starts as an exploration of different forms of communication among trees and humans in the unique cross section of natural and cultural phenomena that is the Rift Valley.

One of the facets of such a communication is scientific exploration. Scientists' understanding of trees’ ability to communicate has been evolving. The Interpretation of such communication has also attracted artists. The EDEN (Ethics – Durability – Ecology – Nature) project was started by artist Olga Kisseleva in 2012. The artist worked to interpret communication among trees in about 30 countries using scientific equipment for measurement and cultural practices for interpretation. Some sub-species of trees and modalities of communications explored in the “Listening to the Rift Valley” project have also been explored in EDEN projects. These parallels are giving the “Listening to the Rift Valley” project an additional dimension, putting the experiences of the trees and humans of the Rift Valley in a broader perspective and in a bigger network.
