Krohg was encouraged to study law by his family which he did, at the same time he also attended at the royal drawing school in Christiania. After finishing his studies he traveled to Germany to study art under famous painters like Hans Gude and Gustave Courbet.
His art is often naturalistic, picturing everyday life and often the darker aspects of human existence.
