Tunic worn by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Back view

This blue wool Russian-style child's tunic was worn by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and is depicted wearing the tunic or one similar in a number of paintings and miniatures: The most significant of these, as it reflects a dated event, is a painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter showing the Prince, then 2 years and 11 months old, wearing this tunic when Queen Victoria received Louis Philippe I, King of the French, at Windsor Castle. on 8th October 1844.

A hand-written object label was attached to the reverse of the object when it was acquired - Proper Left (PL) shoulder - it reads; ‘This was worn by King Edward the VII Oct 8th 1844, when Queen Victoria received Louis Phillipe at Windsor Castle; he was then Prince of Wales’.
