The painting probably depicts a scene of temptation – the roughly outlined third figure could represent Satan. Both the subject matter, and the way of painting which was still atypical at that time – sketchy and highly expressive (with colours spread over a dark surface) – contribute to the unique character of the artist’s work, whose innovativeness had a strong impact on Goya’s paintings.
