These three gold-gilded monochrome
paintings were commissioned by Panayiotou
and created by an iconographer who used
the same artisanal process that is used in
the creation of Orthodox religious icons.
With these monochromes Panayiotou
abstracts any form of representation and
brings forth the golden background as the
only element within the painting. The work
reposes on a commercial application of
Byzantine iconography (a profession of icon
maker where one will go to order an icon to
keep in their house or offer to a church) and
develops conceptually into the historic
battle of iconomachy, a war on the power
status of representation.
