In this work, Michael Ancher (1849-1927) depicts two fishermen from Skagen who are anxiously scanning the sea. The weather is bad but the object they are looking at is outside the picture frame. However the same two fishermen appear in Michael Ancher's monumental major work, 'Will he weather the point?', in which a large group of fishermen are standing on the beach evidently staring in agitation at a fishing boat battling the violent waves. Michael Ancher found his models among the fishermen of Skagen who he painted again and again. The heavily-lined faces of these simple, worthy and hard-working fishermen were well suited to be portrayed by a realist like Michael Ancher. Author: Lisbeth Bonde, M.A and art critic.
