The Two figures of seated dogs were acquired by Augustus the Strong from the estate of Kriegsrat Daniel Friedrich Raschke (died 1722). Small spotted dogs such as these pups were often depicted as companions to ladies in contemporary Japanese coloured "ukiyo-e" (pictures of the floating transient world) wood block prints.
