This famous painting was in the past known as "The Couresans", a name derived from Romantic literature. The picture actually presents two ladies who show clear signs of wealth, nobility and honesty, starting with theis elegant clothing and fashionable hairstyles.
Only recently has it been possible to ascertain that the painting is actually missing the upper part that corresponds to the painting named "Hunting on the Lagoon" noe in the Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, in which there is the continuation of the lily in the vase resting on the parapet in the Correr portion. It is thus clear that the picture shows two ladies waiting for their respective consorts to return from the hunt.
