Kozielsk prison camp was set up in the summer of 1940 in place of a previous special camp, from which about 4,400 prisoners – Polish officers – were murdered by the NKVD in Katyń in April 1940, on the orders of Stalin and the Political Office of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
