Invited by Sir John Murray, Utrecht portrait and genre painter Pieter Christoffel Wonder moved to London in 1828 for a period of seven years. The paintings from this period are the best in his oeuvre. The painting of the staircase in his own residence dates back to this period. He has hidden a clue of the location and his signature in the address attached to the game on the small table. The use of perspective in this painting makes it a masterpiece, especially with the light that flows into the room from different angles creating beautiful nuances of colour.
