Escena de playa

This work by Joaquín Sorolla displays one of the most recurrent themes in his artistic oeuvre: maritime scenes on the light-bathed beaches of Valencia. In Escena de playa, we see a man at sunset driving two oxen, which are dragging a boat from the sea, while a woman gazes at the contents of the basket. The composition is balanced, despite the density and speed with which the brushstrokes were made, communicating a humid atmosphere, in which the reflections of light give solidity to the figures in an innovative fashion.
