Philadelphia, United States

Large medallion with profile relief of President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), Union General during the American Civil War and 18th President of the United States, in wooden frame. The medallion is similar to ancient Roman coins or Italian Renaissance medals. The unusual color contrast between the golden bronze head and the deep reddish hue of the copper platter, which was probably allowed to oxidize to a darker color prior to being lacquered, makes it also resemble a cameo portrait. This medallion was restored to its original 1865 appearance in the early 1990s.
