Union of Florence and Fiesole

The painting describes the appeasement between Florence and Fiesole, that took place, according to tradition, after a war in 1010. The two cities are represented as two old men "who embrace and join together"; to seal the union, the symbol of the Florentines - a white lily on a red background - turned into a red lily on a white background, as a tribute to the emblem of Fiesole.
