Rachel Whiteread makes sculptures constructed from 'negative spaces'. As she explains, 'I use a direct casting technique to reveal the negative, manipulating apparently mundane domestic items to produce pieces that surpass their original identity. I think there is a correlation between these domestic items and our physicality.' 'Untitled: Six Spaces' is one of a number of works in which Whiteread has created subtly coloured, semi-translucent resin cubes by casting the voids found beneath different chairs, and so transforming a negative space into a positive sculptural mass.
