Francis Newton Souza was a founder member of the Progressive Artists' Group. He was expelled from St. Xavier's High School due to the obscene graffiti on the walls, and later from J J School of Art due to his participation in Gandhi's Quit India Movement.

Souza's paintings were commentaries on religion, human relationships and society. His figures were often distorted, aggressive and sexualized. He was also an articulate writer; Souza wrote the P.A.G.'s manifesto and published acclaimed essays after moving to London in 1949. After his stint in London, he moved to Paris, where he stayed till his last days.
