Manu Parekh was born in Ahmedabad in 1939. He studied at Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay, graduating in 1962. Parekh began his artistic career with a show of watercolours but later produced a diverse range of work from paintings to set and stage designs, even acting in plays from time to time. He served on the Handloom Board of India as a design consultant, allowing him to study the work of indigenous artists and craftspeople.

Parekh's work is characterized by bold lines and colours - always preferring to work in the genre of abstractionism. He responds to the world around him, experimenting with surrealism by ordering his compositions around geometric and organic elements.

He was mainly influenced by Rabindranath Tagore's expressionistic style. His themes revolve around the nature of man's experience of the world, reflecting the violence we inflict on one another as humans. Manu Parekh's works are in several collections across India. He has won many awards and received the Padma Shri in 1992.
