MILELE CONTEMPORARY LAB

Odile Uwera (b. 1996, Rwanda) is a writer and illustrator who lives in Kigali, Rwanda. Her work travels across mediums and explores the theme of individual identity as it relates to collective identity in a diverse world.

In September 2022, she was part of a group exhibition in Cologne, Germany. The exhibition was titled “Africomics” and showcased her comic “Nameless in Cape Coast” alongside 14 other comics from SubSaharan Africa. Her comic was also published in an anthology of the same name (AfriComics) by Schiller & Mucke (Germany) in collaboration with Goethe-Institut.

In January 2023, she was awarded a screenwriting grant by the Rwanda Film Office (RFO) through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in partnership with the German Federal Ministry For Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Deutsche Gesellschaft Für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GMBH.

In December 2022, she had her first solo exhibition titled “untitled - a journal of uncertain times” that took place in Kigali, Rwanda. In March 2022, she self-published a Rwanda themed coloring book for Adults and Children called “NKUNDA IWACU”(I Love Home) which sold copies in Kigali and abroad.

She had a career spanning 8 years as a graphic designer & illustrator before shifting to creative writing in 2024. She is currently developing her body of work in writing, including a novel, short stories, and film scripts.
