Mary T. Smith was from a family of sharecroppers, or tenant farmers. She was born with a hearing impairment that isolated her from her peers, and she spent a lot of her childhood making art. As an adult, she began painting salvaged materials to decorate her yard. Her property was filled with art that expressed her dedication to God. The thick painted lines of these portraits are typical of her work.
