Alice Wagner (Lima, 1974) is inspired by the tiger blanket, an object characteristic of Peru’s hybrid modernity, with Asian tigers linked in the popular imagination with Andean big cats to form part of present-day working class identity. The piece is given an extra layer of complexity through the transformation of the blanket into a pottery object (shattered and reassembled, in the manner of many museum pieces), thereby stripping it of its functionality but lending it a two-dimensional aspect that throws the tigers of the original design into relief.
