Hoca Ali Rıza, Koleksiyon’daki imzasız ve tarihsiz Vaniköy’den peyzajında Boğaziçi kıyılarının ahşap camilerinden, Sultan IV. Mehmed’in (S. 1648-1687) hocası Vanî Mehmed Efendi’nin 1665’te medresesi ve yalısıyla aynı süreçte yaptırdığı (2022’de yangın geçiren) Vaniköy Camii’nin yanına kurmuştur şövalesini. Belli ki burası ressamın iyi tanıdığı bir yerdir ve benimsediği tercihlerine uygun, gösterişten uzak bir yer… Bu iki katlı ahşap camii, güneşi toplayıp yansıtan kavuniçi rengi sıvasıyla, eskimiş zeytin yeşili kepenkleriyle, üst kat köşesine çıkma olarak ilişmiş yuvarlak alçak minaresiyle ve harap görünümlü ilave yapılarıyla aşinalığın ve yalınlığın albenisini iletir ressamın fırçasından. Sanatçı caminin önündeki ağaç kümesini kompozisyonun merkezine almıştır, Boğaz’ın maviliğinden daha öne. Oldukça boş tepeleriyle ve kıyı boyundaki ağaçlarıyla küçük bir parçası görünen Boğaz’da bir yelkenli süzülmektedir, karşı kıyıda bir yalı görünümü tamamlar. Ön planda ara ara kır çiçekleriyle bezenmiş otlar zemini kıyıya kadar kaplar. Ağaç kümesinin arkasında bir küçük sundurma yer alır, ressama özgü dinginlikle, usulca verilen, yaşantıya dair ipuçlarıdır bunlar; izleyicinin ilk bakışta kavrayabileceği ve imgeleminde içine girebileceği bir dünya.

In his unsigned and undated Vaniköy landscape in the Collection, Hoca Ali Rıza places his easel beside the wooden mosque on the Bosphorus shore, known as Vaniköy Mosque—built in 1665 alongside the madrasa and waterside mansion of Vanî Mehmed Efendi, the tutor of Sultan IV. Mehmed (r. 1648-1687)—which unfortunately suffered a fire in 2022. Clearly, this is a place well familiar to the artist and aligns with his preferences for modesty and simplicity rather than ostentation.

This two-story wooden mosque, with its sunlight-catching ochre plaster, worn olive-green shutters, rounded low minaret perched as a cantilever on the upper corner, and its dilapidated annexes, conveys a charm of familiarity and plainness through the painter’s brush. The artist centers a cluster of trees in front of the mosque, placing it ahead of the Bosphorus’s blue expanse.

A sailboat glides on a small visible part of the Bosphorus, with its rather empty hills and shoreline trees, while a waterside mansion completes the scene on the opposite shore. In the foreground, grasses decorated sporadically with wildflowers cover the ground all the way to the shore. Behind the cluster of trees, a small canopy appears—subtly and serenely rendered in the artist’s signature style—offering quiet hints of daily life; a world the viewer can grasp at first glance and immerse their imagination in.
