A depiction of a Maharashtrian lady, possibly a singer or courtesan, as is evident from the baithak (floor seating) seen in the image. Draped in rich silks, Ravi Varma clearly showcases the region she is from through the manner in which her sari is draped. The heavy silk stole or odhni was traditionally worn by women of noble descent, or by those who could afford such garments in those times.
It is believed that this reproduction could be the exemplar to Ravi Varma’s painting titled ‘The Bombay Singer’.
