Although inscribed Steuben in block letters, and signed with the cursive signature F. Carder, it is possible that this vase is not a Steuben piece but was made instead by H. P. Sinclaire & Co. who offered a line called Nubian Black. The Steuben signature may be explained by the fact that, in his later years, Frederick Carder often signed pieces of his work that were brought to him for identification, relying only on his memory of the thousands of designs that created during his career.
This vase has a large pontil mark which is characteristic of Sinclaire glass. Their Nubian Black line was produced from about 1920 to 1923. Although this piece has acid etched decoration, Sinclair glass was mostly undecorated except for a white rim.
