Museo Nacional de Arte Romano

Museo Nacional de Arte Romano
Mérida, Spain

This unique piece was found in what was known as the Aula Sacra, in the peristyle of the Roman Theatre in Mérida. It was probably part of a series of imperial portraits dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. This is a representation of the Emperor Augustus with a veil over his head which shows him as Pontifex Maximus, the maximum religious authority. This work, carved out of Carrara marble, is thought to have been an import.
